Happy Feast Day, Saint Therese!

 

 

First off, a very happy day to everyone

and happy feast day to Saint Therese of Lisieux, the Little Flower!

 

 

 

Here's a 'real' picture of lady of the day

(obviously not a real photograph, although those do exist)

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

and here's my felt doll of Saint Therese.

She was one of the first dolls that I made.

 

I made her with a slight sense of urgency for a couple reasons:

I love her (and that would've been enough),

a lot of other people love her (I got a lot of requests),

and there are a TON of resources for children and adults on Saint Therese, so she is fairly familiar to people who may not have a strong devotion to one (or any) saint in particular.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

I feel very blessed that the response to the saint dolls has been so positive,

and I have been getting more and more requests for new saints everyday.

For that reason, I haven't had a heck of a lot of other things to share with you (but I'm NOT complaining!)

:)

I was unsure for awhile how to do his hair,

but ended up just using felt, and I'm pretty happy with the result.

 

However, I have to mention that the most difficult part of this one was getting just the right degree of receding hairline... is that inappropriate? probably. but it's true.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Anywayzz,

I love hearing from all of you

and I especially love that so many people are psyched about the saints.

 

I have gotten a SLEW of requests for Saint Gianna (no surprise there).

 

What other saints would y'all like to see?

I have a list going and would love to hear your thoughts.

Our Learning Calendar

By the way, I'm aware that today is actually the 27th.
It is also not All Saints Day.

Y'all are awesome.

I mean it.

  

I've been getting some great ideas/requests the past couple of weeks.

Many have been for different saint dolls.

Recently a college friend and household sister mentioned the lack of cute learning calendars out there.

 

I did some research and quickly decided that she was 100% right, 

so as you might guess, I made one myself.

 

So here it is!

 

 

I tried to put all of the basics in there,

 

The days, number dates, and months are laminated for durability.

Plus, I always love an excuse to use my laminator. :)

 

The numbers for the date live in these colorful pockets.

 

The weather and seasons are felt 'ornaments',

 

Of the season and weather ornaments,
my favorites were the leaves for "Fall"...












And the kite for "Windy"








I put velcro on the back of everything.
I used the "sticky back" vecro patches, but I reinforced them with a dab of hot glue when I was sticking them to felt.

And (of course) I couldn't pass up the opportunity to throw in some Catholic details,

particularly the liturgical season,

with little felt chasubles to indicate the appropriate (geek alert!) liturgical color.

 

I also added a "Holidays" pocket

for feast days, solemnities, and whathaveyou.

 

And then a "Verse" pocket for the Bible verse of the day/week/month (whatever).

I'm currently working on a list of toddler/preschool friendly Scripture verses.

Any suggestions?

 

I finished it with a colorful polka dot backing,

added some loops at the top for my dowel,

and done!

I'm lovin' it so far!

I'm thinking about adding it to the Etsy shop as a made to order item,

but I have some details to work for that before it's listed.

The biggest detail is that this did take a pretty large chunk of time,

especially all of the embroidering of the lettering...

so we'll see. :)

Catholic Saint Dolls!

I'm back!

and I'm introducing my new project and newest listing in my Etsy shop:

 

Catholic Saint Felt Dolls

 

 

Long story short: I wanted a saint doll for a friend's daughter,

so I started with one and then someone asked me to make another.

Then someone else asked me to make another.

So here's what I have so far!

 

 

 

 

Saint Kateri Tekakwitha

 

complete with shawl, headband, and mocassins (obviously)

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Her hair is made of braided yarn,

I cut some fringe in her shawl and hand sewed the design around the neck.

 

 

Then we have...

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Blessed Teresa of Calcutta

aka "Mama T"

 

Looking stylish as always in her Missionaries of Charity sari and veil

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Each doll comes with a laminated prayer card with some fun facts like feast days and such and a prayer or quote on the back.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Next we have

 

Saint Therese of Lisieux

aka "the Little Flower"

 

obvisouly I had to make her a little cross the roses.

and to be perfectly honest a lot of it is... well.... creepy.

Crocheted Newborn Slippers

I got an order a couple of days ago for some newborn slippers and hat.

Sounds pretty simple (and it eventually turned out to be).

After all, I have made plenty of slippers before,

but not newborn.

I was a little stumped on the sizing,

until I remembered that I had Ben's footprint from moments after he was born.

It's hard for me to believe that his feet were ever that small,

but there it is: proof.

From there, I was able to re size my pattern fairly easily to make these happen.

So small... sigh...

Anyway, scroll all the way down to find the pattern if you're interested,

and please let me know if anything is unclear

so I can correct it.

For those of you who don't crochet,

I'll be having these "take home" sets available in my Etsy shop in the coming weeks.

Newborn Slippers Crochet Pattern:

Abbreviations:

CH- chain stitch

SL ST- slip stitch

SC- single crochet

HDCD- half double crochet decrease

For the Slippers:

I used a medium weight (4) 100% cotton yarn and a US H/8 (5 mm) crochet hook.
(please note that I reversed the colors for the pictures below, using pink for the slipper and white for hte flower)

CH 10
 

Row 1: Skip first chain, SC in next 8 chains, 3 SC in final chain.

 

turn,*you're now going to SC in next 7 st along the back side of the chain,

2 SC in last st. SL ST to join.

Row 2: CH1, SC in next 8 st

2 SC in next st, SC 1, 2 SC in next st

SC in next 8 st, 2 SC in last st, SL ST to join.

Row 3: CH1, SC in next 9 st, 2 SC in next st, SC in next st, 2 SC in next st, SC in next 9 st, 2 SC in next 2 sts, SL ST to join.
 

 

Row 4: CH 1, SC in the BACK of each st around (see pic below), SL ST to join (you will have 27 sts total).

See the two threads that you would normally stitch through?
You're just going to stitch through the back one.

See?

You'll now have the sole of the slipper with a little rim around the bottom.

Starting to take shape, yes?

Row 5: CH 1, SC in next 12 st, 2 HDCD (half double crochet decrease) over next 4 st
*this means you're going to be decreasing by 2,
over the four stitches at the "toe", yarn over, pull a loop through the first sc, yarn over, pull a loop through the second sc, yarn over and pull through ALL of the loops on your hook (then repeat once for the next 2 sc stitches),
SC in the next 11 sts, SL ST to join.

so now you should have a toe shape

 

Row 6: CH 1, SC in next 11 sts, 2 HDCD over next 4 st, SC in next 10 st, SL ST to join, tie off and weave in ends.
 

tah dah!

Repeat to make a second slipper.

For the Flower:

CH 4, join to make a large loop.

Within that loop, SC 1, CH 3, SC 1 into loop, CH 3, SC 1 into loop, CH 3, SC 1 into loop, CH 3, SC 1 into loop, CH 3, SL ST to first SC (five petals).

Tie off, using left over tails to attach the flower to the slipper where ever you want it. Weave in ends.
