Crocheted Newborn Slippers

I got an order a couple of days ago for some newborn slippers and hat.
Sounds pretty simple (and it eventually turned out to be).
After all, I have made plenty of slippers before,
but not newborn.

I was a little stumped on the sizing,
until I remembered that I had Ben's footprint from moments after he was born.
It's hard for me to believe that his feet were ever that small,
but there it is: proof.

From there, I was able to re size my pattern fairly easily to make these happen.
So small... sigh...

Anyway, scroll all the way down to find the pattern if you're interested,
and please let me know if anything is unclear
so I can correct it.

For those of you who don't crochet,
I'll be having these "take home" sets available in my Etsy shop in the coming weeks.

And Maria, if you're reading this:
thanks for the order
(and the motivation to figure these slippers out),
and more importantly, CONGRATULATIONS.
:)
Newborn Slippers Crochet Pattern:

Abbreviations:
CH- chain stitch
SL ST- slip stitch
SC- single crochet
HDCD- half double crochet decrease

For the Slippers:

I used a medium weight (4) 100% cotton yarn and a US H/8 (5 mm) crochet hook.
(please note that I reversed the colors for the pictures below, using pink for the slipper and white for hte flower)

*This has been edited and I've added pictures since the original post due to so many comments that y'all were having a difficult time. Thanks for letting me know!
And special shout out to my reader, Katelin, who helped me immesely by simplifying the pattern! I hope it helps!

CH 10

Row 1: Skip first chain, SC in next 8 chains, 3 SC in final chain.

turn,*you're now going to SC in next 7 st along the back side of the chain,

2 SC in last st. SL ST to join.

Row 2: CH1, SC in next 8 st

2 SC in next st, SC 1, 2 SC in next st

SC in next 8 st, 2 SC in last st, SL ST to join.

Row 3: CH1, SC in next 9 st, 2 SC in next st, SC in next st, 2 SC in next st, SC in next 9 st, 2 SC in next 2 sts, SL ST to join.

Row 4: CH 1, SC in the BACK of each st around (see pic below), SL ST to join (you will have 27 sts total).

See the two threads that you would normally stitch through?
You're just going to stitch through the back one.
See?
You'll now have the sole of the slipper with a little rim around the bottom.
Starting to take shape, yes?
Row 5: CH 1, SC in next 12 st, 2 HDCD (half double crochet decrease) over next 4 st
*this means you're going to be decreasing by 2,
over the four stitches at the "toe", yarn over, pull a loop through the first sc, yarn over, pull a loop through the second sc, yarn over and pull through ALL of the loops on your hook (then repeat once for the next 2 sc stitches),
SC in the next 11 sts, SL ST to join.

so now you should have a toe shape

Row 6: CH 1, SC in next 11 sts, 2 HDCD over next 4 st, SC in next 10 st, SL ST to join, tie off and weave in ends.

tah dah!

Repeat to make a second slipper.

For the Flower:

CH 4, join to make a large loop.
Within that loop, SC 1, CH 3, SC 1 into loop, CH 3, SC 1 into loop, CH 3, SC 1 into loop, CH 3, SC 1 into loop, CH 3, SL ST to first SC (five petals).
Tie off, using left over tails to attach the flower to the slipper where ever you want it. Weave in ends.
Again, I hope that's clear!
Let me know if you have questions. :)

    Thanks :)

    1. Yikes! I can't believe I forgot that... I used a medium yarn (4) called Cottontots by Bernat, and my hook was a crochet hook size 7. :)

    1. Hi Lauri! Thanks for your question. Once you get all the way around in row, you'll slip stitch into your first single crochet to make a complete round. I hope that helps! Let me know if you need more clarification.

  4. Hi. These are sooo cute! I am trying to make them right now for my baby girl due in March. I am a beginner and have only done a hat so far. I was wondering, in the first row you turn. Does this mean and head back toward begin point or to crochet the underside of the 10 original stitches? Then after that when you get to row 2 do you begin to circle around? Am I making any sense or should I just give up lol. Thank you in advance.

    1. Okay, yes... this makes sense to me! So... you'll in the first row, you'll work to the underside of the first 10 original stitches. Then in all following rows you'll "work in the round", meaning you'll work in circles like a spiral around, and NOT turning back. I hope that all makes sense! Let me know if you need further clarification.

  10. I've restarted this project four times now and I must be really stupid because I can't get it to come out at all. I think I must be doing the SL ST to join part wrong. What am I slip stitching to join?? I slip stitched in to the last SC in the row which made a circle but it’s not looking right at all.

    1. looks like a few of y'all are having some problems with the slippers, so I'm hoping to post clearer directions, more pics, or perhaps even a video (gah!!!) soon. stay tuned...

  11. Hi, your directions say you used a size 5 hook, but I noticed in one of your comments above you answered someone that you used a size 7?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi Debbie! The white pair that I made originally was with a size 7 hook. The pink pair pictured in the pattern was with a size 8 hook which is also sometimes referred to as a 5 mm. Both will work with very little to no difference in overall size. I think the yarn ended up laying a bit better with the size 8 hook. Hope that helps!

  12. Thanks that is very helpful! I used polyester instead of cotton and am wondering if that changed my measurements at all. Approximately how long from heel to toe should the shoes be? Thanks again! You do beautiful work!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I don't have exact measurements for you, unfortunately, because I've gifted all of the slippers away. The size will depend mostly on if you use a similar weight yarn and also how tightly you hold the yarn while crocheting. All in all, they should be roughly the same size. The good news is that polyester is typically stretchier than 100% cotton, so your slippers will have more "give" which will make them much more forgiving in the size department even if they're a bit snug. :)

  14. I love these but my daughter is on size one shoes. How can I alter this pattern to make out fit her?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi Bekah! So glad you like them. To make them bigger, you would extend the original chain. However many chains you add, you'll have to add that many crochet stitches to each side of the shoe. You may also have to add rows to make them wider as well as longer. Let me know how it turns out!

  15. This are so adorable!! I tried making these for a friend's newborn but for some reason I end up with extra stiches on the sides. So when you say to do the hcd increase mine end up more on the side that at the front. I hope this makes sense lol I guess my main question is: how many stiches shouls I have in the first row including the 2chs at the beginning of the turn? Maybe that will help me make it righr from the start.

I'm not really good at following patterns and this one is one more lol

Can anyone help me please? :-) thank you

  16. I figured it out aftwe making the slippers 3 times lol I think I got lost because of the scs lol

I put a strap on them though for those wiggly baby feet :-)

It's so funny because when my 5 year old saw them he thought they were baskets lol

Now onto the hat, we'll see how that ones comes out lol

Thank you for sharing your pattern with us. They are so beautiful for little girls :-)

  17. I don't understand what I'm doing wrong. I have the same issue as the person above me did. My hdcdc are ending up on the sides as well. A stitch count would be really great. I think it's the joining that's messing me up. I may have to omit that part.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I ended up making mine work and come out looking like a shoe! However, I think it would help everyone out if you would give your stitch counts and also specify if you are slip stitching to the first single crochet or to the chain 1 stitch. That is what I had to figure out on my own, along with on some rows there is a space between (the joining stitch) your last stitch and the slip stitch and one row (row 3) there is Not a space/stitch in between. I just had to play with it! Thank you very much for sharing, it is adorable! I hope this was helpful and I didn't confuse anyone. I am fairly new to crochet also but I have tons of patterns that I have bought and I know it helps me A Whole Lot knowing where to slip stitch and if the chains count as the first stitch or not. Happy Crocheting to All! :)

  20. I'm having the same problem as the above people with the decreases ending up on the sides. Will try to figure out the stitch count on paper myself but was wondering if the first chain 1 counts as the first SC. Seems like it does on some rounds but not on others.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Hi everyone! I've edited the post to simplify the pattern with some additional stitch counts in the hopes that it will clarify some things for you! Hope it helps!

  23. I made one and it looks too big for a newborn so I used a 4.25 hook and started with 9 sc instead of ten. This seems like a better size for newborn. Thanks so much for posting your pattern.

  24. I made -- and ripped out -- this pattern at least a dozen times. The toe just wasn't right. Since I'm new to crochet, I thought I must be doing something wrong. So, I sat down with a pen and a piece of paper and mapped out the stitches. Turns out -- I was following the pattern correctly -- the toe was skewed. So, I made some changes to rows 5 and 6 and the toe came out correctly. I'll share the changes I made -- if you like them -- use them. The mapping also gave me counts for each of the rows -- I'll share those as well.

Row 5: CH 1; SC in next 9 stitches; HDCD in next 2 stitches; SC in next stitch; HDCD in next 2 stitches; SC in next 13 stitches (25 stitches in round)
Row 6: CH1; SC in next 8 stitches; HDCD in next 2 stitches; SC in next stitch; HDCD in next 2 stitches; SC in next 12 stitches (23 stitches in round)

    Stitch counts for other rows: Row 1 = 20 stitches; Row 2 = 23 stitches; Row 3 = 27 stitches; Row 4 = 27 stitches; Row 5 = 25 stitches; row 6 = 23 stitches.

  28. Hi! I love the pattern, but I am really struggling having the toe come out in the right place. I've been crocheting for years, and have tried this pattern four times now...not sure what is going wrong but I think it might be in the slip stitches...hmmmm....going to try some of the suggestions further down in the comments...
